James D. "Jimmy" Atkinson, USAF

GARFIELD, Ga. - James D. "Jimmy" Atkinson, 70, died Friday, August 15, 2014. Mr. Atkinson was born in Reading, PA. and became a native of Garfield, where he was raised.

 

He was a graduate of Emanuel County Institute, Twin City and Brewton Parker College, Mount Vernon. He then joined the United States Air Force and worked as a helicopter mechanic, where he served in the Vietnam War.

 

Mr. Atkinson moved back to Georgia where he owned and operated Western Auto in Claxton for many years. He then returned home to Garfield, where he was employed at King Finishing of America and eventually retired. He was also a member of Alee Temple Shrine Club of Savannah.

 

Mr. Atkinson was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Evie Atkinson, brother Charles F. Atkinson, and half-sister Betty Barton.

 

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Hebron Cemetery with Donald Atkinson and Rev. Rick Holt officiating.

 

Survivors include, 2 Daughters, Crystal Jones (Craig) and Jamie Lambert (Mike) of Twin City; 2 sons, Josh Atkinson and Brandon Atkinson of Swainsboro; a step-son, Brian Oglesby of Millen and 3 granddaughters, Jerica Scott, Janna Scott, and Sadie Lambert of Twin City.

 

Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen.
