Larry Dean McLaughlin, Col., USAF (Retired) May 27, 1938 - September 23, 2010 McLAUGHLIN, Larry Dean, USAF Colonel (ret) age 72, of Fairborn, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at home. He was born May 27, 1938 in Willard, OH. to Lawrence and DonnaBelle (Young) McLaughlin.
Larry was a 1956 graduate of Willard High School, 1960 graduate of Bowling Green State University (BA) and Central Michigan University (MA).
He served in the US Air Force 1961-1989. Veteran of numerous combat rescue missions in the Vietnam War, he retired as a Colonel. Assignments included Craig AFB AL, Stead AFB NV, Shaw AFB SC, Tan Son Nhut AFB Republic of Vietnam, NAS El Centro CA, Elmendorf AFB AK, Osan AB Republic of Korea, Kelly AFB and Wright-Patterson AFB OH. Duties included helicopter pilot, operations officer, personnel officer, base level Executive officer and Director of personnel, and Major Command Chief of Staff. Aircraft flown included CH-21B, H-34, U-6A, T-28A, C-130B, C-47, HH-3E and T-29.
After military retirement he worked several years at Crown Personnel. Larry was a kindhearted soul who will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
He was preceded in death by his parents of Willard OH and brother Gene McLaughlin of Bell CA. He is survived by his wife, Patti L. (Miller) McLaughlin with whom they would have celebrated their 53rd anniversary on October 27 2010; son Michael (Susan) of San Antonio TX; daughter Shawn (Mike) Quinn of Fort Wayne IN; granddaughters Shannon (Shawn) Khan, Erin Quinn and Molly Quinn; grandsons Ryan McLaughlin and Jason Quinn; great grandson Nathanial Khan.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3 - 5 P.M. at the BELTON-STROUP Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd, Fairborn. A funeral service will be at 10:30 Monday at the same location, Rev. Al Baumann officiating.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery VA.
