Jackie Lee Mangrum, TSgt, USAF (Retired) August 10, 1941 - November 28, 2012
Jackie Lee Mangrum, age 71, of Marion, IL, passed away at 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, in the Veteran’s Nursing Care Center of Marion, IL.
He was born, Sunday, August 10, 1941, in Cobden, IL the son of Jack Orville and Dorothy Ellen (Murphy) Mangrum.
He grew up and attended school in Marion, IL and received advanced training while in the United States Air Force.
He answered the call of this nation by serving in the United States Air Force, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam from March 17, 1961, and after his period of faithful service was honorably discharged as a TSGT, December 1, 1976. While in Vietnam he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on July 1, 1968 and was admitted to the order of the Jolly Green Giants, having served as a member of the 37th Air Rescue Squadron at Danang Airbase, Republic of Vietnam, from May of 1968 to May of 1969.
After returning from Vietnam he was an over the road truck driver until the time of his retirement in 2000.
He was united in marriage to Nadra Dean Durham on Saturday, May 17, 1980, in Sumter, SC and they have shared over thirty-two years together.
Jackie Lee was of the Protestant faith. He was a life member Heyde-Pillow V.F.W. Post No. 1301 and a member of Disabled American Veterans both of Marion, IL.
Lee enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing and spending time with his pets. He loved his family and his many friends and the many good times they shared together, he loved his country and took pride in caring for his family. He was a good husband, father, brother and grandfather. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Nadra Dean Mangrum of Marion, IL; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jana Perrier and Susan Marie and Danny Arrowood all of Marion, IL and Leslie Diane and Daniel White of Herrin, IL; special niece, Linda Renee Mangrum of Marion, IL; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Todd Anthony Reed, Toby Neil and Kendra Reed and Nicky LeWayne and Andrea Reed all of Marion, IL; fourteen grandchildren, Teera Dawn and husband Daniel Prather, Jessica Lynn Clark, Alec Hunter Perrier, Amanda Charlene Reed, Kelly Dean Reed, Chyanne Reed, Erica Reed, Joshua Neil Reed, Hannah Grace Reed, Dawn Johns, Amie Wilson, Dusten Klus, Corey Short and Tianna Short; eleven great-grandchildren, Collin Micheal Reed, Breanna (Watts), Elisha Blake Johns, Raven Nicole Johns, Rylie Prather, Chloe Browning, Lilian Browning, Olivia Prather, Isabella Prather, Aubrey Klus and Layla Klus; two sisters, Glenda Mangrum of Johnston City, IL and Marsha Diane Hart of Buckner, IL; two brothers, Harold Dwayne “Bud” and Mary Mangrum of Johnston City, IL and Bobby Darrell and Renee Mangrum of Mulkeytown, IL; four sisters-in-law, Nancy Mangrum of Crab Orchard, IL, Linda Jean Mangrum of Johnston City, IL, Donna Ozment of Creal Springs, IL and Yvonne Heal of Marion, IL; close friend and brother-in-law, Donald Dee Durham of Marion, IL; also several nieces and nephews, other extended family members; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Mary Charlene (Beasley) Mangrum; daughter, Janice Lee Mangrum; two sons, Jackie Lee Mangrum II and John Michael Mangrum; three brothers, infant, Michael Mangrum, Donald Ray Mangrum and Billy Joe Mangrum; mother-in-law, Grace White and infant niece, Marilyn Joanne Mangrum.
Arrangements for Jackie Lee Mangrum were entrusted to the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street, Marion, IL.
It was his wish to be cremated and a gathering of family and friends was held on Saturday, December 1, 2012 in Marion, IL.
For those who preferred memorial contributions were made to the “Marion VA, C.L.C. Hospice Program”. Memorials were mailed in care of Marion VA, C.L.C. Hospice Program, 2401 W. Main St., Marion, IL, 62959.
