I have not stayed in touch with the happenings of the Pararescue units and men over the past several years. I googled Mike and was very shocked to find out of the crash. I was a student of Mike in Lackland AFB in 1992-93 ( Balls 4 )and though I was medically discharged after nearly making it through indoc, I was very impressed and highly motivated to become a PJ and represent them as Mike did. He is a pure testiment to what this country is and what it will hopefully be in the future. He will be sorely missed. September 21, 2007 I served with Mike at the Combined Air Operations Center near Riyadh back in 2001. I knew that working in a support position while his comrades were out in the field was driving him nuts, but he persevered and did a great job during the first days of ENDURING FREEDOM. Ironically, many of the same people who knew Mike then were back at the CAOC when news of his death was announced. We were both Master Sergeants and talked about how to inspire our young airmen, his children, and what a great airshow Langley put on. We kept in touch off and on through e-mail until we both deployed in 2003. I miss him very much and am so grateful I had a chance to know him. I don't think there was one day went by at OLH-MACOS that I did not hear that from then SSGT Maltz. He dropped me one day at the reception desk and left me in the lean and rest position for just over 8 hours. When he finally came back around to discover me in that possition, he said "BAILEY, who dropped you?" I said "You did Sargeant". He said "When was that?" I relplied, "this morning around 0700" - it was around 1530 then. He said , "Oh, I did? Well...KNOCK EM OUT!! When a cadre drops you and says knock em out, that's the way to make you do the amount of pushups required to pass that current week's evaluation. He then recovered me. SGT Maltz was a model human being, Sargeant, CADRE. He pushed me and drove more than any one has ever done so before. No one believed I could make it through the Pararescue Combat Control indoctrination course at Lackland but him. I owe graduation to him. I know that many many more people owe their lives to him. He was an outstanding human. You could trust him with your life. He had your back. What an extreme loss to this country and his family and friends. He will be sorely missed. You taught me to be the rock I am today and how to persevere, never giving in or quitting on anything. You'll always be an inspiration to me even though I received all that ribbing you gave me when I was struggling with my water confidence training. At least I know there's a guardian angel looking down on me and expecting only the very best out of me always. It was such a shock two weeks ago to discover that you were gone. I still can't believe it. I'll never forget the way you were ready to try anything in Alaska back in the late 70's -- hangliding, rugby, skiing, running all over Alaska. Just plain horsing around. I'll never forget that scratchy laugh, your always upbeat attitude - man you should have been a comedian. Heck - you were! :-) And even though we lost touch in the eighties, I thought of you - "what the heck is Mikey up to these days?" - I'd think that every time after I'd tell someone about my USAF years and about the big guy from Long Island. I'm so proud of what you became and did in Pararescue: as a PJ, a jumpmaster, a leader, a teacher, a coach. If anyone was meant to be one, it was you. You truly were a hero -- are a hero. And I have no doubt you were thinking of your own boys that day you went out to rescue the two injured children in Afghanistan. You will be sorely missed. But you will not be forgotten.
