Winifred "Win" Jeffries Smith died July 29, 2000 at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Weber, Utah following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Win was born September 27, 1936 in Shults, McCurtain, Oklahoma to Jeff Henson and Ruby Faye (McDonald) Smith. On September 9, 1973 he married Joan Clark Johnston in Elko, Nevada.
Win retired October 31, 1980 from the United States Air Force after 26 years of service. During his career he was a flight engineer for H-53 helicopters. He served for over five years in Vietnam and Thailand. A few of the medals Win received were 4 Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with 33 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with six oak leaf Clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Award with five oak leaf clusters, Air Force Combat Readiness Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 12 CR, Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Win is survived by his wife Joan of Roy, Utah, his stepchildren who loved him as a real father, Ron (Julie Hilton) Johnston of Morgan, Utah, Doug (Kimber Ammons) Johnston of Morgan Utah and Cindy (Jim) Sorley of Layton, Utah.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Rob, Camron Katie (Ron's Children), Jeremy, Nick, Riley, Chelsea and McKenna (Doug's Children) and Steven Sorley.
He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Walter (Joan) Smith of Jacksonville, Arkansas. Earl Wiliford (Diane)Smith of North Glenn, Colorado, Wilburn Cartwright "WC" Smith of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Ola Faye (Bob) Brown of Cerro Gordo, Arkansas, Zelda (Chuck) Love of Dallas, Texas, Wendell Wilburton "Bud" (Gene)Smith of Goodwater, Oklahoma, Ruby Louise Roden of Cerro Gordo, Oklahoma, Weldon Smith of Dallas, Texas and JoAnn (Ali) Mirzaie of The Colonys, Texas. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Wesley Smith and Delbert Smith and two sisters Wanetta Marie Smith and Dorothy Jean Smith. He is also preceded in death by grandson Jeffrey Merrow Sorley.
Funeral Services will be held with military honors at 11:00 Wednesday, August 2nd at Walker Mortuary in Morgan, Utah. Friends may call the Mortuary, Wednesday 10:00 AM till 10:34 AM.
