Two Officers Injured In Helicopter Accident


Three Air Force officers escaped serious injury Monday afternoon when their H-1 "Huey" helicopter crashed at Ogden Municipal Airport during a training flight.

 

Maj. Arlie L. Mustoe, and instructor for the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing at Hill Air Force Base, was treated at the base hospital Monday for a dislocated shoulder.

 

Maj. Hans M. Stobenau suffered facial lacerations in the mishap while Capt. Eugene O. White walked away from the wreckage unharmed. Both are student pilots on assignment to Hill AFB from the 304th Rescue Squadron located at Portland, Ore.

 

The helicopter went down at about 3 p.m., crashing next to a runway in the northwest section of the airport.

 

No cause for the crash has been determined, but the incident is being investigated by safety officials from Hill AFB and the Federal Aviation Administration.

 

According to Col. William E. Moore, commander of the 1550th, and examining board will convene today to begin sifting statements and other data gathered by wing safety officials.

 

Col. Moore estimated that it will be at least two weeks before the board completes its work and comes to a determination on the cause of the crash.

 

No damage estimates are available but the wing commander indicated the helicopter would be repaired if possible or salvaged to provide part for other Hueys.

 

This is the second 1550th helicopter to crash at the airport during training missions in the past year; three crewmen also escaped serious injury on March 13, 1973, when their H-43 "Husky" crash-landed.
