Air Force officials said today the crash of an Air Force helicopter in which five officers died was the third worst disaster of its kind in helicopters
The helicoptor smashed into a cow pasture near here Wednesday night while havy winds from a line of squalls, raked the area. Search units found the wreckage Thursday.
"It appears the helicopter dropped from a considerable height," and Air Force spokesman said. "It apparently was not hit by lightning and had sufficient gas."
Two of the dead were identified as 1st Lt. Julius C. Guinn, 28, Pineville, LA., and 1st Lt. George Leslie Parker, 25, Estes Park, Colo. The names of the other were withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The worst helicopter crashes on record were at O'Neil, Neb., July 30, 1953, and in Korea last July 28. Six men were killed in each of the crashes.
