August 26, 1951 - June 11, 1995


 

Stuart L. Saikkonen, age 43, of 113 Miller Street, Horseheads, NY died sunday, June 11, 1995 as the result of an airplane accident in bath, NY while performing an air show at the Jolamtra airport in his double-winged Steen Skybolt airplane.

 

Stuart was born August 26, 1951 in Ithaca, NY. the son of Leslie and Sarah Mudge Saikkonen.

 

He was a Vietnam Veteran serving his country with the U.S. Air Force flying H-53 helicopters used for search and rescue. He was a supervisor of Product Engineering at Corning Incorporated and a well known pilot in the local area. Stuart designed and built experimental aircraft and owned Elmira Air Sports which was located at the Blue Swan Airport in Sayre, PA. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter #533 and the International Aerobatic Club.

 

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Sheleman Saikkonen; step-daughter, Kimberly DeRenzo; and parents Leslie and sarah Mudge saikkonen of Trumansburg, NY.


Stuart L. Saikkonen was a potential VHPA member who died after his tour in Vietnam on  June 11, 1995 at the age of 43 from a crash during an aerobatic demonstration at the Jolamtra Airport in Bath, NY in his home built double-wing Steen Skybolt airplane in Horseheads, NY.
